The inaugural event of the KATPAHA Project, with a target of planting one Million Palmyrah seeds in the Kilinochchi District with a view to remedying speedy destruction of forest cover, was held day before yesterday.
The Kilinochchi District Secretary, Mrs.Rupawathy Ketheeswaran participated as the chief guest of the event for planting 10,000 seeds as the first stage of the above project and inaugurated the project planting the first seed.
The seeds have been planted along both sides of the 6 Kms. long sand bund in the spill area of the Iranaimadu Tank, to a total distance of 12 Kms.
This event had been organised under the aegis of KIlinochchi Social Development Council sponsored by KIlinochchi District People’s organization, International Union of Kilinochchi, Vaddakkachchi and Ramanathapuram.
Several people participated in this event including the Coordinator of KIlinochchi Social Development Council, and the Director of Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Dr.T.Sathiyamoorthy, the General Manager of the Palmyrah Development Board, the Coordinating Secretary to the state Minister of Plantation, farmers from the Iranaimadu Farmers Organization, Members of the Kilinochchi Town Rotary Club.
