Kilinochchi farmer Amarasingam successfully cultivate apple
A farmer in Kilinochchi/ pachchilaipalli area, Amarasingam has been successful in apple cultivation.
He had brought an apple plant from London around four years ago and had planted it in his farm and maintained it as any other plant in his farm. The apple tree had borne fruits last year and Amarasingam had harvested them and went on to maintain the plant.
Currently the plant had borne fruits again and is ready for harvesting. Although it has the taste of imported apples, its size is smaller, he said. If the tree is maintained with proper technical advice good result could reaped, he has expressed hope.
The said farmer has undertaken cultivation of plants cooler climate areas such as pineapples, grapes with considerable success. More success could be attained if advices and assistances are provided to him he said.
It is notable that although, apple cultivation was undertaken in Nuwara eliya District of Sri Lanka in 1960, it was later abandoned. However, it is undertaken at a home graden level in some areas.
