Kilinochchi – Iranaimadu Tank water level had gone rapidly up to 29 ft

Following the heavy rains that are lashing the North, the water level of Iranaimadu Tank, the biggest Tank in the North, has gone up to 29’ as per confirmed information received up to yesterday evening. The water level has gone up by 10’ in just the last two days. The water level at last Wednesday was at 16’. Water is continuing to flow into the Tank.

Due to the renovation work and the prolonging drought, water was not saved in the Tank for past few years. Following the renovation work being completed this year, water is being stored in the Tank this year for the first time this year. The earlier water holding Capacity has been increased from 106, 500 acre feet to 120,000 acre feet of 36’ of water. The water inflow , water discharged and safety measures are being continuously monitored.

Everyone, from the farmers upwards, are eagerly awaiting the inflow of water into the Tank. Meanwhile the water levels in other big Tanks such as Akkarayan, Kalmadu, Vannerikulam, Kariyalai Nagapaduvan Tanks also have been increasing in the last few days.
