Kokkilai fishermen to be charged in court for constructing Vadi

Karaithuraipattu Divisional Secretary who ordered to allocate lands to Kokkilai Tamil Fishermen to put up Vadi and the fishermen who have put up vadi are to be charged in court it is understood. It is also understood that this case is to be filed in Mullaitheevu on the Instructions from the Director General of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

Traditionally the Tamil fishermen are engaged in Karaivalai (Sein net ) Fishing  along Kokkilai beach. Normally they will be allocated ‘Paadu’. There were few Sinhalese fishermen  who had Paadus. After the war the Sinhalese fishermen had dominated all paadus and refused the rights of the Tamil Fishermen.

In a discussion where Sinhalese fishermen were also present, the rights of the Tamil Fishermen were established with age old documents like gazzet etc. But the Sinhalese fishermen caused disputes again and sent away the Tamil fishermen who went to put up their vaadis. After the intervention of the Divisional Secretary, they were granted their paadus.

But another hurdle had materialized. The Fisheries Department has instructed the Fisheries Inspector to file cases against the DS and the Fishermen.
