The Attorney General has called, the Mulaitheevu District Secretary and the Divisional Secretary of Karaithuraipattu to find a solution in dispute around the land granted by the Karaithuraipattu Divisional Secretary to local fisher for construction of Wady in Mulaitheevu, Kokkilai beach.
The Department of Aquatic Resources had filed a case that the land allocated to local fishermen is extending into the Beach Sein net Padu (Karai Valai Padu) of the southern Fishermen and a ban should be proclaimed against the construction of the Wady, on behalf of 3 Southern Fishermen, in the Mulaitheevu Distict Court. The court had issued an Interim Injunction for the local fishermen to engage in fishing at this area. Although the Divisional Secretary had submitted that, the area used by local Fishermen is lying 375 Meters away from the Padu of Southern Fishermen’s Padu supported by survey plan by state Surveyor, the Department of Aquatic Resources had applied to the court to declare the survey Map submitted by the Divisional Secretary null and void and hand over said area to the Sinhala Fishermen.
Following the court ordering that the surveying be done in the presence of all parties. When the surveying was undertaken the southern fishermen interrupted the Survey causing the court to issue an order banning both parties to engage in fishing there.
In-spite of the ban on both parties the southern fishermen are continuing to fish there in absolute contravention to court order. The Local fishermen had appealed to be allowed to fish there. Court had requested the opinion of the the AG. However AG’s opinion was not made available to court.
In this context the AG has called the District Secretary and the Divisional Secretary of Karaithuraipattu to Colombo for consultation to put forward a solution to the problem of the fishermen and the meeting is to be held on 29th at the AG’s Office.
However it is notable that the relevant case is also to be taken up on that day.
