Six of the eight accused charged with murder of 26 Tamils at Kumarapuram , Trincomalee were acquitted from all charges by the Anuradhapura High Court yesterday. The case was heard before jurors.
26 Tamils including women and children were murdered by Army men under liquor on 11.2.1996 at Kumarapuram in Trincomalee. 39 were injured in this Massacre.
Charges were filed against 8 Army men serving in Thehiyatha Army Camp at the time. The case was transferred to Trincomalee courts and then to Anuradhapura courts.
121 were cited as witnesses and 40 them were called and their testimonies were recorded.Many villagers testified that they directly saw incident.
State council Sutharsan de Silva, who appeared for Attorney General said the accusation had been well proved and the accused be given death sentence.
Defence council said that the prosecution had failed to prove the case beyond doubt.
Judge acquitted the accused from all charges because of the contradictions in the testimonies of the witnesses.
