A memorandum was sent to the president on behalf of the people. Among other things it said:
* 21 years have passed after this massacre, perpetrated by Army men who were very familiar to us, but under the influence of liquor. Our poor children and women were raped, shot and slashed to death. They were identified by us in courts.
* We participated in the court proceedings in the sincere hope of getting at least a trifle of justice. But the court judgement had amply proved the same justice system of the past existing even today.
* If you respect all people equally as you have told in your Independence Day speech, give us our due justice, relief, compensation and rehabilitation.
Social enthusiasts, general public, and peoples’ representatives from all over Trincomalee took part in this commemoration event.
