Land Grabbing in Mulaitheevu – Archeological Department enters the arena, people express anxiety

The Archaeological Department has taken action to acquire around 4 Km long stretch of land from Nayaaru Bridge to Khomba junction., the area people said. Sign post saying “Property of Archaeological Department” had been erected along the area, they said.

Southern fishermen had engaged in grabbing lands in the guise of putting up vadis in the Mulaitheevu District. On another side, people’s lands are being disseised in the guise of Mahaweli ‘L’ Zone. Forest Department had identified even people’s land as belonging to the Department. In a context where Mulaitheevu District is being plundered in various ways, the Archeological Department also had commenced to show their smartness.

Lands belonging to people also are included in the stretch of 4 Km from Nayaru bridge to Khomba Junction. The sign posts of the Department indicate that these lands also come under acquisition, it is reported.

They further said the Department is operating from the house occupied by the Viharathipathy, located in Nayaaru. The name board of the Archaeological  Department is also to be found planted in that premises.
