Land permits to Sinhalese who have occupied the Lands of Tamils in Mulaitheevu, despite Court orders

Contravening a Court Order, the Mahaweli Development Authority has issued permits for permanently staying and engage in fishing, to Sinhalese who had earlier encroached lands of Tamil people in Kokkilai Kokkuthoduwai and Karunaddukerny of Mulaitheevu District.

The Mahaweli Development Authority has issued these permits authoritatively and with great disregard to a court’s order to expel all encroachers of the lands of Tamil people. Confusion has been caused among Tamil people regarding this planned Sinhala Colonisation by the Mahaweli Development Authority.

Tamil people were driven away in 1983 from areas like Kokkilai Kokkuthoduwai and Karunaddukerny of Mulaitheevu District. Sinhalese people forcefully occupied the lands left behind by the Tamil people, built luxury houses and started demanding issue of permit for them.

Tamil people filed a case in the court through the Karaithuraipattu Divisional Secretariat and the court ordered that then encroachers be expelled. This is an act ridiculing law and order, said the people and people’s representatives of the area.

Further, the Mahaweli Development authority has started to survey lands not resettled by the Tamil people. The Tamil people had expressed fear that the colonization of Sinhalese may be undertaken in their lands.
