International Council of Eelam Tamils (ICET) has urged people in homeland to gather in large numbers and support those who are on hunger strike.
The relatives of the involuntarily-disappeared are on the third day of a hunger strike in Vavunia, Sri Lanka demanding information about their loved ones and release of all political prisoners held without charge for decades. All political prisoners have announced their own hunger strike on Thursday in support of their relatives’ demands. We encourage this gesture of support.
The declining health of four of the hunger strikers is an indication of their resolve to fight for their cause. None of the promises made by the Sri Lanka Government during earlier hunger-strikes have been implemented, leading to the life or death hunger strike resolve to expose the empty promises made in the past by the current “good governance” regime.
While some of the key Tamil political leaders, who were elected by the people to alleviate the hardship faced by the Tamils, are busy bailing the Sri Lanka government from international scrutiny, the entire Tamil population should rise in support of this hunger strike and expose those who have forgotten them.
There is no point in trusting the Sri Lanka Government or the elected Tamil political leadership. All the Tamils should join hands at the grass roots level to protect our inalienable rights. The large size the gathering will send a strong message internationally and help win our demands and protect our fundamental rights.
We humbly urge our brothers and sisters in our homeland to gather in large numbers and support those who are on hunger strike. ICET said in a media release issued today.
