Adverse weather condition prevailed yesterday in the Jaffna peninsula yesterday. From morning to noon, heavy rains, thunder and lightning were experienced in the Peninsula.
Keerimalai Naguleswarar Temple and Chavakacheri Hindu Ladies College were struck by lighting and damages were caused. Generally Keerimalai, Chavakachcheri, Nunavil, Chappachchi Mawady areas were subjected lightning strikes yesterday.
The main switch of the Computer lab of Chavakachcheri Hindu ladies caught fire in the lightning strike and the fire was put out. CEB was informed the electricity supply was disconnected by them.
A part of the Rajagopuram of the historically famous Keerimalai Naguleswarar temple was hit by lightning and some sculptures mounted on it were damaged. This strike had occurred at a time when the construction work on this 108′ high Gopuram had been completed.
Fortunately, there were no losses of life.
Meanwhile, 71 persons from 22 families had been affected by the heavy rain, thunder and lightning that prevailed in the Mulaitheevu district and 7 houses had been affected by heavy rains in Vavuniya District.
