Up to 240 Tamil asylum-seekers on Nauru and Manus Island could be excluded from Australia’s refugee deal with the US because of their links to Tamil Tiger rebels.

Human rights advocates, asylum-seekers and their families have warned that any Tamils who are returned to Sri Lanka would be at risk of brutal torture, leaving few options for resettlement after the detention centre on Nauru closes on October 31.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam group was defeated in Sri Lanka’s civil war and is regarded as a terrorist organisation by the US government. Australian Tamil Refugee Council spokesman Aran Mylvaganam said most Tamils on Nauru and Manus ­Island could be seen to have links to the Tamil Tigers from when the group ran the government in the north and east of Sri Lanka………………..
