Livelihoods affected by the prolonging drought in Mulaitheevu District. Shortage of Drinking water

The District Secretary of Mulaitheevu District, Mrs. Rupawathy Ketheeswaran said that due to the continuous drought prevailing in the district, livelihoods such as Fishing and agriculture had been drastically affected and arrangements are being made to provide drinking water to nearly 50% of the people.

Shortages in drinking water are prevailing in more than 100 villages such as Koddaikaddiyakulam,Thenniyankulam,Uyilankulam, Aiyankankulm coming under Thunnukkai Divisional Secretary’s area of the Mulaitheevu District, and in the villages of Manthai East, Odduchuddan, Puthukudiyiruppu , karathuraipattu. As small and medium tanks have dried up, agriculture is heavily affected. Fresh water fishing and the fishing of the small scale sea fishermen also had been affected,  she further said.
