Sea Foods like Crabs, Cuttle Fish and Prawns have become rare species in the local fish markets. In the local markets of Jaffna, Crabs, Prawns and Cuttle fish are being sold at Rs.700, 1,400 and 1,000 per kilo respectively.
The Fish vendors said that although these are caught in plenty, in Jaffna seas, they are not brought to the local Market. Earlier, only a few Sea Food export firms were operating here. As plenty of Sea Food Export Companies are operating in Jaffna, Competing against each other in buying sea food, especially Crabs, Prawns and Cuttle fish from fishermen and taking them away.
As the number of export- purchasers had increased the prices of these had also suddenly gone up. They cannot be sold at local markets at this high prices. Due to the high prices fishermen wish sell their products to the exporters, and hence the scarcity in the local markets, they said.
