Maithri defeats Rajapaksha by slim margin

Common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena defeated incumbent president Mahinda Rajapaksha in Yesterday’s poll by just over 449,072 votes.

A closer look at the election results shows that the poll in the North and East and places where Tamil and Muslims predominantly live has been the deciding factor of Maithripala’s victory. Whereas, President Mahinda Rajapaksha has secured more votes in the areas where Sinhala people predominantly live, such as Anuradhapura, Kurunagala, Matale, Kegalle, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Monaragala, Galle, Matara, Hambantota.
