Maize cultivation in Jaffna, Successful

The Agricultural Research centre of the Jaffna District that the experimental cultivation of drought –surviving Maize cultivation had been successful.

The International Maize Research Institute had carried out experimental Cultivation of Drought-surviving Maize varieties in Jaffna and Anuradhapura Districts for the first time.

86 Internationally approved high level hybrid  Maize strains from 4 maize varieties were cultivated. They were  found  to be drought-resistant and high yielding.

He also said the Mexican experts have come here to evaluate the cultivation. It had been also found out that these varieties can control 90%  growth of Korai- grass (Cyprus rotundas lim.).

The farmers will be distributed with seed-maize from this harvest, he said.
