The state Minister for Children’s affairs Mrs.Wijekala Maheswaran made a visit to Iranaitheevu area which come under Poonakary DS Division in Kilinochchi District for studying about the resettlement of people lived in the area on day before yesterday at around 10.30 a.m.
The people there requested the Minister to obtain permission for fishing overnight at Iranaitheevu. The Minister speaking there said action should be taken to resettle these people who were displaced from 1992. I will take action first to obtain the permission for overnight fishing, she said.
Commenting on this the people said that they eagerly awaiting to return back to their traditional habitat.(0 women-leadership families are solely depending on fishing as their livelihood. If they are allowed to settle back they will be able to catch beach-de-mers and increase their income.
190 families from greater island of Iranaitheevu and 50 families from smaller island were expelled from their habitat leaving behind the cattle and fishing equipment which formed the basis of their livelihood, 26 years ago.
These people were settled in an arean in Mulankavi and Iranai matha nagar was created with basic infra structure facilities and the Iranaitheevu RC School also temporarily operating there.Whatever facilities are given the fishermen are longing to go back their own habitat, the Fishermen said.
The State Minister promised to speak with the Government and get a favourable answer from the Government.
