The Vadamaradchi Fishermen have warned that they will undertake a massive protest struggle if action is not taken to remove the vadis of fishermen from outer Districts. They have declared so, after the Navy Intelligence threatening the fishermen holding a protest demanding the removal of Beach de mer vadis from Vadamaradchchi beaches.
As Sinhalese Beach de mer fishermen from Puttalam and Udappu areas had put up hundreds of vadis on the beaches of Vadamaradchchi North, Thalayady, Maruthankerny and Chempianpattu beaches, the local fishermen held a protest rally on last 27th.
Murder threats have been made through telephone to several of the local fishermen who led the protest. Threats of ” we will abduct you in white van” , ” are you eager to visit the 4th floor” had been made, said the fishermen to Maruthankerny Divisional Secretary, at meeting held at the Divisional Secretariat yesterday.
Divisional Secretary K.Kanageswaran said that he will inform relevant persons regarding the matter.Although this meeting ended without taking any decision, decision will be taken in the meeting of the Union of the Fisheries Federations, the fishermen said.
