The Maveerar Day, for remembering the Maveerars of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam who have sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Tamil people, is being observed today sentimentally, in the motherland and abroad.
The Thulumillams in the motherland have been cleaned and well prepared for the event. Political Leaders had announced that people could commemorate their Maveerar without any fear. Those who cannot visit Thuyillumillams are requested to light sacrificial flames at their respective homes.
For the first time after the end of the war 8 years ago, the commemorations are to be held in most of the Thuyillumillams.
After the end of the war the Sri Lankan Army occupied several Thuyillumillams and had destroyed the tombs of the Maveerars and the rest of the Thuyillumillams were left to be overgrown by jungles. They are adorned with Red and Yellow flags.
As usual bells will peel for the Maveerar at exactly at 6.02 p.m. and the sacrificial flames will be lighted at 6.05 p.m. The Maveerar day songs will be broadcasted at the Thuyillumillams, it is learnt.
