Mini cyclone in Vavuniya: 83.3 mm rain yesterday only

Trees have been uprooted in Vavuniya at noon yesterday when a mini cyclone with heavy rain lashed Vavuniya and the falling trees had damaged several buildings and vehicles including one parked in the police quarters.

Starting at noon 3 hours of heavy rains and mini cyclone lashed Vavuniya. 83.3 mm rain had been recorded yesterday only. Trees broke, uprooted and fell damaging several buildings and vehicles.

A tree in the premises of the Vavuniya police fell down damaging 5 vehicle and a part of the quarters was also damaged. A car parked at Puthukudiyiruppu area was damaged by a tree falling on it. In Kurumankadu, a large tree was uprooted and fell across the road blocking the traffic on Vavuniya – Mannar Road for a few hours.

Apart from this, falling trees within Vavuniya Secretariat, Hospital, and in several parts of the town had caused minor damages to houses, buildings, and boundary walls. Power cut was experience in several areas due this mini cyclone.
