The employees of the Survey Department have not received so far the approval of the Ministry of Defence, for surveying the lands of the people in Iranaitheevu, it was pointed out.
167 families which inhabited Iranaitheevu had displaced from there in 1991 and living scattered in several places. To date a situation is prevailing where the people cannot get settled in their own lands. These people undertook a struggle in front of the Navy base at Mulankavil demanding the release of their lands.
In this context, action was taken to release their lands and subsequently the Army took a team of 14 people. This group after visiting Iranaitheevu had said that there is no hindrance physically for the people to live in the lands and if the lands are released, work left out could be completed.
The Survey Department had intimated that they need 15 days to complete their work and the permission to stay on the island till they finish their work. The departmental Officials had forwarded request to carry out their work through the Divisional Secretariat and District Secretariat. However, the District Secretariat circles said that the approval had not been received to date. The are people had expressed concern over the delay.
