Mirusuvil killing of 8 Tamils – Death sentence of Army Officer confirmed by Supreme Court

The death sentenced passed on an Army Officer for the killing of 8 Tamils in the Mirusuvil area in Jaffna, in the year 2000 , by High Court had been confirmed by Supreme Court.

8 Tamils aged between 5 and 41, who went to see their houses on 19th December 2000, went missing. They  were killed and buried on the following day by army men.

On information from a person who had escaped with injuries in that incident the bodies of the 8 missing persons were recovered. 16 Army men were arrested and produced in the Chavakachcheri Courts. Chavakachcheri  Magistrate,  Annalingam Premasangar, after remanding 15 Army men visited the spot and conducted inquiries. The bodies of killed persons were recovered in front of Military Police and Police.

The AG’s Department which released 10 Army men and cases against 5 Army men in the Colombo High Courts on 19 counts. The final judgment was delivered by Colombo High Court Judges Lalith Jeyasooriya and Preethypathman Soorasena on 25th June 2015.

Staff Sergeant Sunil Rathnayake was found guilty of the killings and sentenced to Death. Other 4 were released for lack of evidence.

An appeal was against this judgment to Supreme Court, which has confirmed the judgment of Colombo High Court.
