The Commander of the SF – Jaffna, Major General Dharsana Hettiarachchi said that, if the Governemnt provide adequate money, the Army camps on people lands will be moved and the lands handed over to the people.
A total of 25,986.87 acre were under the SF in 2009. around 88% of them had been already handed over to the people. 4,512.82 acre are still under the control of the Security Forces. This is around 1.39 % of the land area of the Jaffna Peninsula.2,888.08 acre are under the Army, he said.
Money is needed to shift the camps from the current location. Providing the money is the responsibility of the Government, he said.
He also said that an application had been sent to Archaeological Department to allow the Army to use the Jaffna Fort. If Jaffna Fort will be given, all the camps in the North could be moved into it and all lands could be handed over to the people.
