More than 18 RPG Shells recovered from a residential area of Selvapuram Village Mulaitheevu

Mullaitheevu Police said  yesterday that  more than 18 RPG Shells which were found to be buried in sand in the yard of a house in a residential area of Selvapuram Village in Mulaitheevu yesterday were recovered with the assistance of STF. This recovery was made at around noon yesterday.

The occupiers of the house had excavated pits to plant flower plants and the presence of UXO was noticed following the mamooty they were using sounded off an unidentified object.

Following this the owner of the house had informed Mulaitheevu police, who sped to the spot to make safety measures and they had informed the Mulaitheevu District Judge .

As per the permission granted by the Courts, the Bomb Disposal Squad of the STF had made excavations in the said area and had recovered more than 18 RPG Shell in undamaged conditions as they were buried in a loose soil area.

It is notable that, according to the owner,  last year also more than 60 shells were found while excavating foundation for the house at the same land and were deactivated by the police in a safe place.

It is also notable that in a context where, the Selvapuram area was under the control of Army up to 1996 and under the control of LTTE up to 2008, these shells have been recovered now.
