Nanthikkadal and Nayaru Lagoon under  Wild Life Department. Livelihood of 9,000 families becomes a question mark

Nanthikkadal and Nayaru Lagoon, two fresh water fishing areas have been declared properties of Wild Life Department. Around 21,000 of land area have been declared as natural reserves by the Wild Life Department. It is an offence,  people enter such natural reserves.

The livelihood of around 9,000 families which were dependent on these two lagoons had become a question mark.

The Gazette notification showing the land areas  belonging to the Wild Life Department in Mulaitheevu District had been published in 2017.01.24th. Both Nanthikkadal and  Nayaru natural reserves have been brought under Wild Life Department. 10,234 acre from Nanthikkadal  area and 11,031 acre from  Nayaru lagoon area has been inducted under the department as Natural Reserves.

Villagers of Kumulamunai, Alampil,umugathankulam, Thangapuram, and Chemmalai depend on Nayaru lagoon for their hook fishing. Although some times Nanthikkadal gets dried up, Nayaru Lagoon never dries.

By the Nanthikkadal and Nayaru lagoon going under the Wild Life Department, the Economy of Mulaitheevu District will decline, it is expected.
