Singing the National Anthem in Tamil is a right of a Citizen, the government had declared. There is no law in force that the National Anthem could not be sung in Tamil, said the Cabinet spokesman, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, while announcing the Cabinet decisions yesterday.
A request was forwarded in the National Executive Council, to allow singing the National Anthem in Tamil. But it is not necessary implement what is already said in the Constitution. AS per the Constitution the National Anthem could be sung in Tamil. President’s permission is not needed.
Although there were some problems during last regime regarding this, I allowed singing the National Anthem in Tamil in function I participated as a Minister.
Former government ordered that the National Anthem should be sung in Sinhala in events held in the North. The army intervened in this matter. But I acted in accordance with the Constitution without giving way to the Army to intervene.
The President had not proclaimed any law banning the singing of National Anthem in Tamil. The President need not give permission to implement what is already in the Constitution.
Singing the National Anthem in Tamil is righted guaranteed in the Constitution, said Minister Dr.Rajitha Senaratne.
