The Navy had indicated that the Co-chairs should have the approval of the Ministry of Defence, to visit Iranaitheevu. Earlier the Navy had refused permission for fishermen to stay in Iranaitheevu and engage in fishing. This matter was taken up for discussion in the Co-ordianating Committee meeting held in Kilinochchi District. The Co-chairs decided then to visit Iranaitheevu and review the situation there. It was decided to go to Iranaimadu on 26th June.
But the Co-chairs did not go to Iranaitheevu on that day. People of Iranaimadu were critical of this failure.
The Co-Chairs forwarded a request to Navy through Poonakary Divisional Secretary for travelling to Iranaimadu. But the they had replied that they will be allowed only if they bring an approval from the Ministry of Defence. Although the Co-Chairs told the Navy that they are People’s representatives, the Navy did not budged from their position.
They are asking for Defence Ministry’s approval to travel to a part of the country. After revealing them that I am a Member Parliament, they still wanted the Defence Ministry’s approval. This is why we could not travel to Iranaitheevu on the decided day, said one of the Co-Chairs, S.Sritharan, MP.
