The Navy has occupied the Olaiththoduwai beach area where the fishermen engage in beach seine net fishing and erecting barrier fences. The area fishermen have expressed concern that their livelihood is being affected.
Elaborating further the fishermen said, ” We are engaged in Beach Seine Net fishing for a very long time in this particular stretch of Olaiththoduwai beach. The Navy robbed two ‘padus’ completely and now started to erect fences. A common path is also is blocked off into this area. The fences are being erected robbing and encompassing the beach seine net fishing areas. These fences are constructed just 5M away from the sea edge. Although a discussion with the navy was organised by Mp, Charles Nirmalanathan, it was cancelled at the final minutes because of the absence of the Navy.”, they said.
