Negligence of Irrigation Officers, the cause of the Flood Disaster in Kilinochchi last year, Reports Governor’s Investigation Group

The Investigation Group appointed by the Governor to investigate the causes for the Flood Disaster in last December at Kilinochchi has informed in its Final Report that the Negligence of Irrigation Officers of the province is the underlying cause for the Flood Disaster that occurred in Kilinochchi, last December.

Hence, the Chief Secretary is to appoint another committee to undertake internal inquiry into the cause of the Flood Disaster in accordance with the Final Report of the Flood Disaster.

Governor’s Group was appointed on the basis of serious allegations made regarding the cause of the Floods Disaster in Kilinochchi last December.

The holding capacity of Iranamadu Tank is 36’. But 39.5’ were allowed to accumulate causing the opening of all sluice gates of the Tank and water flowing over all constructions. This was one of the allegations inquired by Governors Group.

Following the group appointed to inquire about the disaster, the Head of the group Engineer Ragunathan handed over the group’s Final Report to the Governor yesterday noon at his office.

The negligence shown by Provincial Irrigation Officers was the cause of the Disaster, the Group had reported. On the basis of this report the Governor had ordered the chief Secretary to hold an internal inquiry regarding the Flood Disaster.
