9 Sinhalese fishermen who were fishing for beach-de–mer in the seas off Nagar Kovil in Vadamaradchchi with license to fish beach-de-mer in Mulaitheevu and were damaging the nets of local fishermen were intercepted by the local fishermen and brought to the shore with the 3 boats in which they came.
The nets of local fishermen were continued to be damaged in the past. In this context, in the early hours of yesterday, Sinhalese fishermen with license elsewhere came in 10 boats and started fishing for Beach de-mer and damaging the nets of the local fishermen.
Angered by this the local fishermen had gone in several boats, intercepted the aliens and brought 3 of these boats and 9 fishermen who came in them. Informed of the incident, Maruthankerny DS, K.Kanageswaran sped to the spot, talked to the fishermenand arranged for the 9 fishermen and and their 3 boats to the Point Pedro police.
The police took over them and had handed over the boats and beach de mers in them to the officials of Fisheries Department, Jaffna. One of the ‘captured’ fishermen is from Mullaitheevu, 2 from Katpiddy and 6 from Vankalai in Mannar.
