New Constitution should be adopted before Provincial Council Elections, Sampanthan insists in  Parliament

The Leader of the Opposition and TNA, Era Sampanthan had insisted in the Parliament that the New Constitution should be drafted and adopted before Provincial Council elections are held.

He participated in the debate on the Provincial Council Elections at adjournment time motion held on Friday yesterday.

Speaking further there,  he said, the government had not held the Provincial Council elections in due time. This raise a question on the Democratic trend of the Government. As the Government had not held the PC election in due time, A suspicion arise as to how the Government is handling PC Elections. The right to elect had to be established. Through that the rights of the people had to be ensured.

We are discussing about power devolution for a long time as from 1920. The people had placed power revolution as an important demand.  All Governments up to now have taken a favourable stance towards power devolution.

We are insisting as a strong demand that we should get power devolution within undivided country through the constitution and live with equity. This is a good opportunity to correct our past mistakes.

The country will not see a new dawn if a new Constitution is adopted. The PC methodology, power devolution and ultimate power devolution should be assured in the constitution , he said.
