The Agriculture Department of Jaffna District has introduced the cultivation of a new variety of “ Tommy EJC” Mango trees.
So far 5,500 trees have been given to the people and the recipients and eagerly engaging in the cultivation of this new variety, said the Jaffna District Acting Director of Agriculture, Anjanathevi Sri Ranganathan.
The Tommy EJC was created in the Ellawela farm.Unlike the traditional Mango trees this variety will bear fruit all throughout the year. Each fruit will weigh around 450gms to 900 gms. The branches of the trees should be prune and the fruits could be harvested standing on the ground. The fruits will have a price fluctuation- less market and are very tasty. 400 trees could be planted per acre and so so far 5,500 plants had been given to the people. 505 grant had been given to farmers cultivating more than one acre and drop irrigation machinery . If properly maintained harvest could be expected in three years she said.
