“There are no political prisoners in prisons. It is the government that should decide regarding prisoners who are on a hunger strike. The Ministry of Justice is unable to take any action regarding the incident,” says the Minister of Justice Wijedasa Rajapaksa.
Mr. Rajapaksa further states there are 225 LTTE suspects in prisons, a group of them have been sentenced and legal action is to be taken against several others. He said all LTTE suspects are accused of exploding bombs and committing murders.
When the UNP was in the opposition and in the issue of political prisoners, it reiterated that a large number of Tamil youths were arrested and detained on suspicion they were members of the LTTE but there had not been any inquiry. They demanded that legal action should be taken immediately regarding the detainees.
