The Karnataka Cabinet has decided that it will not release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as per the interim order of the Supreme Court. At a cabinet meeting held in Karnataka on Wednesday it was decided that water shall not be released until a special session of the legislative assembly is convened on September 23. Following an all party meet in which the BJP was absent, it was decided that a special legislative session of both the houses should be convened to discuss the order of the Supreme Court. The meeting was attended by leaders of the Congress and the JD(S).
Following the all party meeting, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah convened an emergency cabinet meeting. At the meeting it was decided that a final decision should be taken following a special legislative session of the both the houses on Saturday. It was also decided that the Governor would be requested to convene the special legislative session on Saturday. The CM and other ministers would meet with the governor and ask him to convene the special session. At the Cabinet meet, all leaders were of the view that it is impossible to release water to Tamil Nadu. All ministers said that abiding by the order of the Supreme Court at this stage would be impossible as Karnataka had no water left. The court had yesterday ordered the release of 6,000 cusecs of water to TN for seven days starting September 21.(ONE INDIA,2016)
