North-East merger not possible: TNA Spokesman, Sumanthiran

The spokesman for TNA, and MP, M.A.Sumanthiran said that the merger of the North and East is not immediately possible.

If a mechanism of both provinces working together on the basis of cooperation is included in the constitution, the two provinces could be merged over the passage of time , he said.

Sumanthiran met and a had discussion on the contemporary political situations with  the mediamen yesterday, at his office in Jaffna.

During the discussion Sumanthiran was asked to comment on the recent statement of TNA Leader, Sampanthan, saying that Muslim people had to be consulted on the merger of North and East Provinces, and Sumanthiran answered as above.

I do not believe that the merger could be effected before adopting the new Constitution. We are holding negotiations with Muslim factions.

In the current context, even the Muslim leaders will not be able to get the support of the Muslim people for the merger. Several bitter experiences had occurred between Tamil and Muslim races. It will take some time for the wounds to be healed. It is giving hope to see the Tamil and Muslim had got together to form the Government in the Eastern Province.

This is a matter that should be approached with responsibility.  We should not act in a way that will destroy the mutual trust existing now between the two Races, he said. Merger is in the 13th which will be enacted as it is in the new Constitution.
