The NPC CM, C.V.Wigneswaran has appointed a committee to find out ways and means of saving the ponies in Neduntheevu. The CM’s Special Committee has been formed after news of the ponies dying of thirst was published in the local News papers.
This Special Committee headed by Former Minister of Environment, P. Ainkaranesan, also includes MPcs Vinthan Kanagaratnam, Y.Thavanathan, Regional Assistant commissioner of Local government, N.Thirulinganathan, Divisional Secretary, C. Jeyakanthan, and The secretary of the Neduntheevu, Pradeshiya Sabai, K.Ratnarajah.
Following their appointment they have made field visit to areas habitated by the ponies, undertook field studies and participated in a discussion held at the Divisional Secretariat. The committee announced that ways and means of safeguarding the ponies will be identified and a report on their findings will be submitted within two weeks.
These ponies are the descendants of the ponies brought in by the Portuguese. These have been identified as a unique species belonging to this area.
It is notable several people had insisted that, these ponies are biological assets of the Neduntheevu which has become a tourism spot and they should be preserved.
