Onion cultivation in 1,900 hectares this year in Jaffna

The Farmers of the Jaffna peninsula are getting ready to cultivate onions in 1,900 hectares the Agricultural Department said.

As this month is not conducive for onion cultivation, they getting ready to commence cultivation by the latter part of May. They have started ploughing and fertilizing the lands in preparation for the Onion cultivation. As shortages and inadequacies are experienced for yala cultivation farmers are using true seeds for nurseries and through them will engage in cultivation, said the Department of Agriculture.

Some farmers in several areas are engaged in planting seeds despite the severe drought prevailing. Farmers in areas like Kopay, Neervely, Sirupiddy, Urelu, Punnalaikadduvan, Urumpirai , Atchelu and Navatkuli are being engaged in this cultivation.
