Opposition from Southern Fishermen – Construction of Kokkilai salination prevention dam suspended

The project for   constructing a Salination Prevention Dam was abruptly suspended as the Sinhalese Fishermen who had encroached and engaged in fishing along the cost of the Kokkilai beach will allow the contractor to construct the Dam.

The Disaster Management Division had allocated Rs.3,500,000/= and the Agricultural Ministry had called for quotation and had awarded the Contract. When the contractor started construction the said Sinhalese had said they will not allow the construction

800 meters of dam was to be constructed. If it is constructed 170 acre will be spared from getting salinated and the adjoining lands also would be safe guarded.

Now it had been decided to discuss the matter with these fishermen and to take a decision thereafter.
