Opposition to the Thermal Power Plant
The people and important persons in the Muthur area are busily engaged in signature collection campaign against the proposed Thermal Power Plant in Sampur in the Muthur Divisional Secretary’s Area.
This campaign was undertaken following the publication of a report of the study on Environmental impacts by the Central environment Authority. People are expressing their strong opposition for the said proposal.
It is notable that the Indian and Sri Lankan governments signed an agreement in 2013 to set up a Thermal Power Plant in Sampur at accost of US$512 Million and 500 acres of land hand been earmarked, which are located within a distance of 2 Kms. from the residential areas of the people.
It had been warned that the gasses that could be emitted from the plant could cause diseases and that the cattle will be affected by these gasses.
