The Indian team which made surveys of Palaly Air Port , has recommended to the Colombo Government that the Air Port could be transformed into Regional Airport without acquiring further lands from people. The Report of the Committee of Indian specialists has been forwarded to the Sri Lankan Government.
Currently the Air Port is being utilized for local and military Air Port. It was considered for being upgraded into a regional Airport. In March last year A 7-man team of Indian Officials led by Director of Chennai Air Port, Deepak Sasthri came to Palaly, inspected it, and prepared a feasibility report.
The Report of this group had been handed over to the Sri Lankan. It is reported that several matters including proposals for developing the Airport are included in this report.
If the Palaly Air Port is developed into a Regional Airport, it could be brought under the Civil Aviation Authority and the Air Port could be operated by the Civil Aviation Services Institution.
People are strongly opposing moves to acquire people’s lands for the development of Palaly Air Port.
It was reported that suggestions to convert the Air port into a regional Airport without extending then current runways, had been included in the proposals.
