Palmyrah distribution census undertaken, after 40 years, through Satellite

Manager (Extension) of the Palmyrah Development Board, K. Kopalakrishnan said that the census of Palmyrah Distribution is currently undertaken after 40 years, with the aid of satellite. Palmyrah is the identity of Jaffna. Palmyrah has been destroyed  by the War and construction industry.

Previous census was taken in 1978 and 3.5 Million Palmyrahs were found to exist at that time. Over the time this number had been used always. No census was taken after that. The Palmyrah Development Board is planting Palmyrah seeds every year. If destroyed trees are calculated seed could be planted to maintain the distribution.

If 100 seeds are planted, 30 trees will survive. We have the need for more Palmyrahs.   This census had been commenced in the current year. The Geographical and Biological Faculties of the Jaffna University had joined us in this task. Satellite Technology is being utilized in this Census, he said.
