High demand exists among Foreigners and Southerners in recent times. All Vellam (sugar) produced are being sold out on the day of the production itself, it is learnt.
Seasonal production of Palmyrah toddy has commenced now. The Palmyra Development Cooperative Societies had commenced bottling Palmyrah yesterday, and are encouraging production of ‘Pathaneer’ (Sweet toddy) and Vellam( Jaggery). As the foreigners, Southerners and migrated Tamils are showing interest in purchasing so produced Bottled Palmyrah Toddy and Vellam, the Cooperative Societies have decided to increase their productions of these products. The bottling of Palmyrah Toddy and producing Vellam from Pathaneer had been commenced on the 1st of this month.
On that day 25 Kgs. of Vellam were produced and all of them were sold out within the evening of the same day. On last Friday 30 Kilograms were produced and sold within the day. On Saturday, 30 Kgs. were produced and 25 Kgs. Out of it was sold before the noon. The Societies have planned to produce 2,000 kgs. this year and a kg of Vellam is sold at Rs.800/=. Last year 742 Kilos were produced and were sold at Rs.700/= per kilo. Production and the price has been increased on the basis of demand said the Societies.
The Societies also said the migrated Tamil people visiting the motherland and local and foreign tourists are eagerly coming to the society to purchase Vellam. Meanwhile several traders from the south are sending letters asking us to supply Vellam to them. As large amount of money has to be paid to the Government as tax on Bottled toddy the Societies have engaged in full gear in the production of Vellam.
The production of ‘Panankaddi kuddan’ has been started in Thenmaradchchi, people are showing interest in buying them also.
