The people who had taken relief items to foreign refugees housed in Vavuniya were turned back by the Army

Foreign refugees including Pakistan and Afghanistan refugees were brought from refugee camps in Negombo and housed in the Poonthottam Refugee camp in Vavuniya due to the unsettled situations following the Easter Sunday bombings.

A group from Mulaitheevu had taken yesterday relief items for the above refugees. A group consisting of 11 people of the Village Development Council and the Women Development Society Murippu village in Karaithuraipattu Division had gone from Vavuniya with relief items in three autos. However on their arrival security around the centre had been beefed up with the Army, and they, after getting the details of the person who came with the relief had turned them away.

The people who took the relief items commented that they have come from 92 Kms and they were not allowed to meet and distribute the items. Meeting and offering relief items are basic Human Rights. We were prevented from doing so. The Government should take notice of this.
