“It he Southern fishermen had been issued permits to fish in Northern Seas, then the Divisional Secretaries and Departmental Officials should not pose any hindrance to them, and the concerns of local fishermen need not be taken into consideration in this matter”
The Director of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, M.C.L.Fernando said as above, in a firm and dominant voice yesterday among high level officers of the North.
A meeting was organized at the Governor’s Secretariat, by the Governor, Reginold Cooray, to discuss the problems encountered by the Southern Fishermen in fishing in the Northern seas. The Director of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources,M.C.L Fernando participated in this meeting. Further, some Divisional Secretaries of the North along with Additional District Secretaries, Deputy Directors of Fisheries and Aqua Resources Department of Jaffna and Mulaitheevu Districts, District Officers of the National Housing Authority, Land officer, Mulaitheevu and a few southern Fishermen had been invited for this discussion.
More attention was paid on insisting that the Southern fishermen being allowed to fish freely and the Northern officials should not pose hindrances to the southerners. Not much attention was paid on the problems encountered by the Northern Fishermen due to the transgressive fishing of the Southern Fishermen. Further it was openly instructed to Northern Officials that the advantages or disadvantages faced by the Northern fishermen need not be considered in this matter.
The southern fishermen should be allowed without any hindrances in “Padus” for which permits had been given to them by Fisheries Department. The Divisional Secretaries should issue permit for those Padus without any conditions and there is no legal provisions for obtaining the opinion of the local fishermen’s Societies, he had firmly instructed it is learnt.
