The Met Department has warned that strong winds and heavy rains prevail in the North due to a disturbance that is present in the atmosphere over South West Bay of Bengal. Strong winds will prevail in the along the coastal line of North, North West,Western, and southern provinces.
Heavy rains are expected in Northern Province and Trincomalee District. At the same time, as there are possibilities of floods affecting Jaffna District where, 500 cm of rainfall had been received, Disaster Management Officers, Police and the forces are kept in readiness, said the Disaster Management Center.
The water level in the Jaffna Lagoon has risen. If the rains persist flood situation will result. As there may be sudden changes in the weather, instructions have been issued to create a special unit and keep it readiness, said the spokesman for Disaster Management Centre, Pratheep Kodipili.
Meanwhile more than 9,000 people had been affected by the heavy rains. People have displaced from several places including Pommaiveli. Flood waters are flowing over the Navatkuli – Jaffna, Atchuvely – Thondaimanaru, and Araaly – Jaffna Roads.
Following the water level in the Thondaimanaru Lagoon going up, sluice gates have been opened and water released into the sea. Similarly the water level in Valukkiaaru had gone up resulting in Araaly sluices also being opened. Sluices at Navatkuli also were opened.
