Potatoes cultivated in 130 Hectares in Jaffna, says Director of Agriculture, Jaffna

Jaffna District Director of Agriculture, A.Selvarasa said that Potatoes cultivation has been undertaken in 130 hectares in Jaffna this time and  50% subsidy was granted to the Potatoes farmers.

The Samoorthy families who had engaged in potatoes cultivation as livelihood enhancement assistant were provided with incentive payments. As the attack of diseases was low this time harvest was reaped at above average figures. This is the highest cultivation of potatoes in Jaffna District.

The farmers who had applied for seed potatoes  were given 200 kgs seed potatoes each at 50% subsidy. Further Samoorthy beneficiaries were given seed potatoes as livelihood assistance.

Head light Koda and Anova Sasi varieties were issued to farmers. Although cultivation was under taken in large scales in Kopay, Uduvil, and Thellipalai Divisional Secretary’s areas, they were also cultivated in other areas including Thenmaradchchi, Islands and Vadamaradchchi. Experimental cultivation were undertaken in some other areas, he said.
