The Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the TNA, Era Sampanthan said yesterday that there is no alternate opinion regarding the release of the lands occupied by the Forces. If the President orders the Tri-Forces are ready to release the lands. The Forces are not blocking land release.On a suggestion from the President, a meeting between TNA representatives led by Leader of the TNA, Sampanthan and the Minister of Defence, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and the Tri-Forces Chiefs yesterday at the Ministry of Defence.
Sampanthan spoke to the media after a meeting with the Minister of Defence and Tri-Forces Chiefs. He further said that when the war was on lands might had been needed for defence against attacks of LTTE. But there is neither a war now nor the LTTE.We insisted with the Forces Chiefs that the lands of the people should be returned to them. The Commander of the Army in reply said that they have no authority to keep the lands and they are not are not keeping any land by force. Civil Authorities had to take a decision on this. If the President orders to release lands, they are ready to release them.
The struggles undertaken in the North for the lands was also considered in yesterday’s meeting. It was informed there that action had been taken by the Army to release a lot of lands at Kepapilavu. A meeting will be held on 19th with regard to this, he said. As far as Valikamam is concerned, 4,500 acre lands are occupied by the Forces. Action had been taken release a considerable amount of these lands, he further said.
