Prof. Sam Thiyagalingam not allowed to contest the election for VC, University of Jaffna

In a context where Prof. Sam Thiyagalingam has applied for contesting in the Election for electing the VC of the University of Jaffna, heavy debates have taken place in the meeting as to whether to allow his application or not, and as the UGC has refused permission the election for the VC will be held today among the other 5 candidates who have applied for election. Although it was said that the candidates will address the council today, because of the debates it was said that they will do so today morning and the election will be held at around 11.30 a.m. today.

The University Community had earlier requested that Prof. Thiyagalingam be allowed to contest the VC Election. This was subject of 3 –hour long debated long and there was also a suggestion for submitting the matter for opinion of Attorney General. However no decision was taken on the matter. In a context where permission was not granted for Prof. Thiyagalingam, the VC election will be held today among the other five namely: Professors Wigneswaran, Sri Satkunarasa, Raviraj, Mihunthan, and Velnamby.
