The Secretary to the NPC Ministry of Agriculture, S.Sathiyaseelan has said that projects for modernizing the grapes cultivation and the Palmyra based products will be undertaken stage by stage.
He said so when asked to comment about a discussion held in the Provincial Ministry of Agriculture, among Ministry of Primary Industries, Grapes cultivators of the District and manufacturers of Palmyrah based products on last Wednesday.
The Ministry of Primary Industries and Northern Ministry of Agriculture are to pursue projects to encourage and modernize small Industries entrepreneurs.
On this basis we met and had discussion with Grapes cultivators of the District and manufacturers of Palmyrah based products.
The grapes cultivators said that due to the imports of grapes, local products are affected. Imported grapes are tastier and come without seeds. People like to purchase them. Compared to them, our grapes produced by traditional methods are vulnerable to diseases and the climate. We have asked the cultivators to move towards modern methods. They had been asked to undertake Green- House cultivation in extent of not less than 2 million .
Similarly modern machinery had been introduced to Manufactures of Palmyrah based products. Field visits will be made to evaluate their needs and action will be taken to provide these needs to them, he said.
