Project to convert sea water to fresh water at Rs. 9.1 billion

A project to convert sea water to fresh water with financial contributions of Asian Development Bank, French Development Agency and the Government at a cost of Rs.9.1 Billion, at Maruthankerney – Thalayady area in Pallai Divisional Secretary area, said National Water Supply and Drainage Board’s special envoy T. Balasupramanium.

Sea water will be purified to fresh water and supplied to Jaffna District people for drinking purposes, he further said.

15 large over head water tanks are to be constructed for this purpose at a cost of 353 million. In the first stage, work has already started from last January at Allaipiddy, Navatkuli, Vaddukoddau, Velanai, Navanthurai , Chundukuli, and OLd park. The Project expected to be completed before 31.12.2015.

In the 2nd stage , the purifying plants will be installed at Thalayadi  with construction and over head tanks and laying pipes to distribute water, he said.
